Loyola professor wins prestigious Michael Ramsey Prize

The Love that is God, written by Loyola theology professor Frederick Bauerschmidt, Ph.D., was awarded the prestigious . Bauerschmidt received a medal from the Archbishop of Canterbury during a ceremony at the Lambeth Palace Library in London on Dec. 14, 2023.

鈥淔ritz Bauerschmidt has produced a formidable body of scholarship during his three decades at Loyola, and this award recognizes what many of us have long known,鈥 said Frank D. Golom, Ph.D., interim dean of 吃瓜大本营鈥檚 school of arts and sciences. 鈥淔ritz is both a tremendous scholar and one who can share his insights with broad audiences.鈥

Michael Ramsey Prize Shortlist

As a prize for winning, Bauerschmidt was awarded 15,000 pounds, which is about $19,000. In 2024, he will tour the U.K. and U.S. to deliver The Michael Ramsey Prize lecture series about The Love that is God.

鈥淚鈥檓 particularly happy to win this award because it really focuses on writing that is accessible to the public abroad,鈥 Bauerschmidt said. 鈥淚 hope it鈥檒l lead more people to read the book and think about the idea that God is love.鈥

Bauerschmidt has worked at Loyola since 1994. In addition to being a professor, he serves as a permanent deacon of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, assigned to the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.
